Outreach
Ascension’s mission statement reminds us that we are called to
“serve our community as apostles of Christ.”
New to Ascension? Like to Help Others? Ascension takes part in a number of local projects to provide food, health care, and help to troubled youth, including Gaithersburg HELP, Meals on Wheels, the Lord's Table Soup Kitchen, and the Mobile Medical Care and G-SHARP Suspension programs right here at Ascension House. There are interesting, and important volunteer opportunities for us in all these programs.
Outreach Opportunities
Outreach Committee – This group of Ascension parishioners meets every month to help guide and direct the parish’s outreach efforts .
G-SHARP - An Out-of-School Suspension Program serving students in grades 8-12 in the Gaithersburg High School cluster. Under the guidance of a paid director and volunteers, students are able to keep up wit their academic assignments in a safe, structured environment. Ascension members are needed to volunteer.
MobileMed – A medical van staffed with doctors and nurses is at Ascension House every Tuesday to provide low-cost/free medical care to uninsured patients. Volunteers are needed to serve as hosts for a few hours on Tuesdays.
Lord’s Table Soup Kitchen – This community soup kitchen provides a hot meal Monday through Saturday at St. Martin’s Roman Catholic Church. On the first Saturday and third Monday of every month, Ascension members prepare and serve dinner from 1:00 - 5:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help cook and serve. Our youth also help serve on the first Friday of each month.
Community-Based Shelter – For one or two weeks each year, Ascension members provide three meals a day and supplies to guests at this Rockville shelter.
Gaithersburg HELP – This organization provides emergency food to needy families. Food collected at Ascension each Sunday helps to stock the pantry.
Lenten Rice Bowl - Beginning Ash Wednesday and continuing throughout Lent, parishioners may forgo some luxuries and donate the money saved to others less fortunate than themselves. A wooden "rice bowl," symbolizing the poverty of much of the world, is placed at the steps as you go up to receive communion.
Meals on Wheels - Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village clients at lunch time Monday through Friday.
Alternative Christmas Shopping – If you would like to buy meaningful Christmas gifts, come to the Alternative Christmas Sale. Ascension offers fair trade gifts for sale several days in December, including at the Holiday Bazaar. By purchasing fair trade products, you support artisans and entrepreneurs in Third World countries who are trying to make a dignified living.
Linkages to Learning – A program at Summit Hall Elementary School that helps remove barriers to learning. Ascension participates with emergency financial aid, educational seminars, clothing, and school supplies.
Giving Opportunities – The Advent Giving Tree, the Lenten Rice Bowl Offering, and the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Food Collections offer opportunities to give food, money, and supplies to service programs.
