Liturgy
.

At Ascension, worship is at the heart of all we do. The word "liturgy" comes from two Greek words that combine to mean "work of the people." In our worship, all the people, priests, lay leaders and congregation to join in praises and prayers to God. Lay readers read the lessons and prayers of the people. Other lay leaders serve as chalicists, bread bearers, acolytes, ushers and altar guild members. Our choirs both children and adults offer their gifts to lift our hearts closer to God. And the Holy Eucharist is the central focus of each service on Sunday morning.

Grounded in Anglican tradition, we use the resources of the Book of Common Prayer and other authorized liturgies. For most of the church year, the contemporary words of the Rite II service and other liturgies give our prayers shape. However, in Lent, we return to our roots in the English Reformation and use the old Elizabethan prayers of Rite I. At Ascension we value vigorous congregational singing, and we draw on the resources of the 1982 Hymnal, along with two other Episcopal hymnals: Lift Every Voice and Sing II and Wonder, Love and Praise.

Our worship style is dignified but not formal, uplifting yet still reverent. To gather at Christ's table with our brothers and sisters is the greatest gift given to us each week at Church of the Ascension.
